Matthew’s 2009 victory in this Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes was one for the ages. Not only was it her first major victory, she became the first Scottish woman to win one of golf’s major championships. She also triumphed just 11 weeks after giving birth to daughter Sophie.
It led to the North Berwick native being awarded an MBE in 2010, and an OBE in 2020. Matthew, whose husband Graeme caddies for her, has since gone on to captain consecutive European Solheim Cup teams.
She led Europe to victory in 2019 and 2021 after making nine appearances as a player. Born Catriona Lambert, she made three appearances in the Curtis Cup and won the 1993 Women’s Amateur Championship, also at Lytham.
Matthew announced the 2024 AIG Women's Open at St Andrews would be her final time playing the event and she fittingly made birdie on her final hole to finish in style.
