In 1978, Janet Melville outlasted the field at Foxhills in tough conditions to win the third ever AIG Women's Open.
The Englishwoman was just 20-years of age when she claimed the title, at the time the youngest Champion, and in the years since only Jiyai Shin, who was 20-years-old but 37 days younger when she won in 2008, has been a younger Champion.
One of only three amateurs to win the AIG Women's Open, Melville is the only player to have ever won the AIG Women's Open who never turned professional. Melville's other notable amateur achievement during a fine career was winning the Women's Amateur in 1987, beating Susan Shapcott on the 19th hole in the final to take home the title at Royal St David's.
